German Johnson Tomato Seed Organic
These German Johnson Tomato seed are certified organic heirlooms from Virginia or North Carolina. (80 days) Indeterminate. This large plant is one of the parents of the famous Mortgage Lifter. It's known for its copious yields of pink meaty fruits often exceeding 1 lb, mild acid with more than a touch of sweetness.
Deep pink tomatoes are earlier, more uniform, and slightly smaller than Brandywine at 8-16 oz. Fruits have lots of deep, acidic tomato flavor and a rich, creamy texture. There are two strains of this heirloom variety; this is the regular-leaved strain, which is earlier and more productive than the potato-leaved strain.
This is my top pick for making my version of Bruschetta. There is no way I would consider any other tomato! Take a thick slice of freshly baked sourdough bread, slather on some real butter, and stack a thick slice of German Pink tomato, sprinkle thinly sliced scallions, add 2 fresh Mrs. Burn's Lemon basil leaves, sprinkle fresh crumbled Parmesan, drizzle with rosemary flavored olive oil and toast under the broiler for 3 minutes. You should see everyone's eyes squeeze shut when they realize that first delicious bite of bliss. Absolutely awesome afternoon snack!
30 seed per pack. 94% germination.
For all tomatoes, days to maturity are from date of transplanting.
Culture: Tender, cannot tolerate frost. Usually started indoors Feb to April. Avoid using fresh manure as it causes lush foliage with few ripe fruits. Instead use generous amounts of well-rotted cow or horse manure or compost to boost plant vigor, and crushed eggshells at the bottom of each hole for calcium. Heavy phosphorus needs. Responds well to foliar sprays.
Determinate (Det) bush varieties may be staked, should not be pruned.
Indeterminate (Ind) climbing varieties are customarily staked and pruned.
Good seed retains viability so we often commission two-year productions. Organically and sustainably grown seed was rinsed with a sodium hypochlorite solution to reduce the risk of seed-borne disease. This treatment poses no health risks.
Minimum germination soil temperature 50°, optimal range 60-85°, ideal temperature 77°. Emergence takes 6 days at 77°.
Cultural controls: Disinfect greenhouse materials & cages, farming tools & gloves, avoid overhead irrigation, don't work crop when wet, rotate crops, use compost. Don't smoke around tomato plants. Use diatomaceous earth and or wood ashes for dusting pests.
