Painted Serpent Cucumber Seed
Painted Serpent cucumber is (55 days from transplant) so better to start it inside 4 to 5 weeks before last frost date for your region. Cucumis melo var. flexuosus These are also known as Armenian Cucumber or Snake Melon, native to Armenia and brought to Italy in the 15th century. This heirloom is one of our oldest yet neglected plants. It's AWESOME for stir fry's or sliced for salads with an exquisite flavor. It's the best tasting cucumber I've ever eaten! The slender and slightly fuzzy flexible fruits delicately coil like a serpent with alternate light and dark green stripes. Culture like the melon it is, starting indoors in individual pots and transplanting into a low tunnel. Will grow up to 30" but best eaten at 8 to18". Straighter if trellised. Grows best in sandy or loamy soil. Does not do as well in clay soils unless plenty of organic matter is mixed in. I personally like it coiled like a snake because it draws so much attention at the market but I will grow some straight ones on trellis for the chefs. 50 seeds per pack plants about 10 hills.
