Purple Top White Globe Turnip Seed
Our certified organic Purple Top White Globe Turnip seed are generally tolerant of freezing weather, and their roots can be stored for a fairly long period of time in cold storage conditions. (55 days). This nutritious heirloom, from the 1880s, has smooth round roots that are bright purple above the ground and white below. Best eaten when young and tender at about 2 inches in diameter. The flavor is mildly spicy like radishes. Both greens and roots are good steamed or eaten raw in salads. I like mine peeled, cubed and cooked with the greens. Sometimes I add other greens like mustard to improve the flavor. Approximately 350 to 400 seeds per pack sow a fat 25 ft row.
Turnip Culture: Hardy members of Cabbage family. Thinning is critical for full-sized roots. Turnips have a shorter growing season and are not as cold-hardy or as good keepers as rutabagas. Turnips are best picked before they get large and fibrous. Rutabagas, also known as Swedish turnips or Swedes, form enlarged roots above ground with a finely branched system below.
